Mummy brought scissors to graduation

Remember your graduation day? Did you take note of the condition laid down by the SP management to be suitably attired? Well, 50 graduands in the 1978 convocation turned up with long shabby hair and/or in slippers and jeans. They were barred from going up on the stage at the National Theatre and had to sit out the ceremony at the back of the hall, rather glumly. However, two of them were fortunate enough to have wise mothers who had brought along scissors in anticipation of the problem. They had on-the-spot haircuts by Mum!

In 1971 when we moved into the barracks at PMC, we inherited a big playing field with two football pitches and a somewhat run-down running track. We were overjoyed as we had been running around in a small green "stamp" of less than 50 m by 30 m called the Quad" at PEC.

Each barrack had a shower building located behind. On afternoons, we would travel there by bus to train, and then take a long, cold shower to cool off before returning to Prince Edward for makan in the open-air car park. The guys would take their sweet time to shower and change; just to make the girls wait, hot and sweaty in the uncomfortable bus. The girls had to refrain from wandering around to avoid glimpses of bare bodies streaking between shower buildings. Being in an army camp, the shower buildings were not fitted with doors, definitely not meant to be used by ladies.

You could feel their anger seething and simmering when the guys boarded the bus, fresh and cool, smelling of shampoo and Lux soap. This shenanigan ended a few weeks later. The girls decided they had had enough of our nonsense and got organized. They posted guards (armed with softball bats, hockey-sticks and brooms) and courageously took over a shower building to use. Of course the guys, having "lost face", had to do something. From our side, they would shout at the top of their voices "Attack! Charge!", "let's go over", "we are coming ", "let's rush them", hoping to strike panic in those girls." A lot of bravado, but, as the saying goes "all smoke with no fire". Actually we were a "shy" lot. The streaking stopped. They don't call us "Chicken" for nothing!
